White Pocket

Updated: May 22, 2022

Why a Wonder: White Pocket is a beautiful area of sculpted and weathered Navajo Sandstone.

ree

Where: White Pocket is in the Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness area of Arizona close to the Utah border. This area is in between Kanab Utah and Lake Powell off Utah Highway 89. Turn south on House Rock Valley Road for about 16 miles, and then off into unmarked roads for 19 miles, see attached links for detailed maps and directions.

These roads are deep sand dune sand and require a well-equipped 4-wheel drive vehicle. It is best to take two vehicles in case one gets stuck and needs help being pulled out.

ree

When: Spring and Fall are the most pleasant, but it can be visited in Winter or Summer if you are prepared for the cold and heat.

ree

Photography: The area is ideal for photography at sunrise and sunset, when textures and lines are displayed most vividly. Use a wide-angle lens and use the leading lines of the rocks to lead the viewer’s eye to the main subject.
